MATT:

His fame is as the sun....not only among the Comanche nations, but among all men who respect a brave and worthy leader.

GRACE:

That's might fancy talk, but look here, Dillon, I insist you get that little savage out of...

CLANCY:

matt, maybe it was a dumb play bringing Narisha into Dodge, but I had to have you see her. I....I'm awful proud of her, Matt.

MATT:

You should be. She's beautiful.

CLANCY:

And as decent as any white girl I ever met. I don't mind being called a squaw man, Matt. But I sure hate it when they pick on her.

MATT:

(GRIM): They won't. Not if I'm around.

NARISHA (IMPULSIVE):

You are good man! I like you. You be my friend, too?

I will, Narisha.

MOREAU:

Of course.

SFX:

STACKING ITEMS

MOREAU (CON'T):

What color thread?

MATT:

Doesn't matter as long as it's strong enough to hold my socks together.

MOREAU:

Ah! Then I give you green! A dozen spools?

MATT:

One.

MOREAU:

A half dozen perhaps?

MATT:

One.

MOREAU:

For you, ....a bargain. Four spools for the price of three!

MATT:

(CHUCKLE): How many spools you stuck with?

MOREAU (SADLY) A gross. How could I know that in Dodge there is only one woman with a green dress? And she can't sew. You take a cozen, Matt..I give you a can of peaches free.

MATT:

One. But I'll buy the peaches.

MOREAU (SIGHS):

Good. (BEAT) Marshal, I know you do not wish to talk about it, but you should know. It is about your friend's wife....

MATT:

I've heard.

MOREAU:

They're talking of running Mrs. Yarr out of town.

MATT (TIGHT):

How do you feel, Moreau?

MOREAU:

Me! Matt, I am a Frenchman! More even than money I love the romance. (SIGH) And your friend and his beautiful Indian bride...so in love they are. Like children. But...she is a Comanche. It means trouble. Very bad trouble.

MUSIC:

BRIDGE TO BACKGROUND

MATT:

Walking to the Grace Hotel that evening, I noticed the town seemed deathly quiet...as if the very buildings were waiting for something to happen. By the time Clancy, Narisha and I finished dinner and two hours of reminiscences my nerves relaxed a little. Then when Narisha retired, Clancy and I went down the hall to join the poker game...and found a stranger sitting in. He was wearing a black frock coat, two ivory-handled guns and the thin smile of a killer who enjoys his work.

SOUND:

CHAIRS

MOREAU:

Clancy Yarr, Marshal Dillon, this is M'sieu Wade.

WADE (SILKY):

A pleasure, sirs. I hope you don't mind my joining your game.

SFX:

CARDS UNDER

MATT:

It's an open game, Mister Wade...

WADE:

Thanks.

MATT:

Yeah. (BEAT): Same Morgan Wade who carried a gun for Chisum down in the Big Bend country?

WADE:

I worked for Jesse.

MATT:

I recall a Morgan Wade who threw lead for McSween during the Lincoln County war...

SFX:

CARDS STOP

WADE:

All past now. I've given up the hard life. Cards?

MOREAU:

Two for me, M'sieu.

SFX:

SFX:

CARD DECK PUT DOWN

WADE (SIGHS):

My, you are direct, aren't you, Marshal? But I don't mind telling you. I work for Grace.

MATT:

As what?

WADE (SLIGHT CHUCKLE):

Let's say as a finisher. (SHARP) And my first job is on you!

SFX:

GUN CLICKS

WADE (CON'T):

Get your hands up....quick! All of you!

CLANCY (BEAT):

Not a bad draw at that, was it, Matt?

MATT:

Well, he's no Wes Hardin, but it was pretty slick, considering he was sitting.

WADE (SNARLING):

What is this? I said to....

MOREAU:

We heard you, M'sieu. Please....don't shoot.

WADE:

You think I won't shoot?

MATT:

Not if you're smart.

CLANCY:

For one thing if you shot one of us, you'd have to shoot us all to be shut of our mouths.

MOREAU:

And even Jack Grace would not stand for that, Wade. I am surprise that Grace would think you could bluff us.

WADE:

Bluff, is it?...

MATT:

There's another reason why that would be a foolish idea, Wade. It's in my lap, with the muzzle aimed right at your belt.

WADE (SHARP REACTION):

What...........?

CLANCY:

I guess you oughtta know, Mister......my 44's pointing in the same direction.

MOREAU (APOLOGETICALLY):

Mine is only a twenty-two derringer, M'sieu Wade....but it, too, points at you under the table.

WADE (CONFUSED):

But I.......that is....

MATT:

Goes to show you, my friend. Never draw on a man unless you can see his hands.

WADE (HARD SWALLOW):

It seems, Gentlemen......I have made a little mistake.

MATT:

It seems. Empty them and holster them.

SOUND (CLICK OF CYLINDER TURNING, TEN SHELLS DROPPING RAPIDLY TO TABLE)

MATT (CUE):

Good bye, Mister Wade. If I were you, I'd eat tomorrow's breakfast in another town.

WADE:

As you say Marshal.

SFX:

CHAIR SCRAPE

WADE (CON'T):

You have taught me a lesson tonight....(SLIGHT LAUGH) And it's no shame to be beaten by three of a kind. You can all put your guns up.

MATT:

Guns?

WADE:

Guns.

MATT:

Don't know about the others, but I never drew my gun.

CLANCY:

Glad I didn't know that, Matt. I'd been a mite nervous seeing as how my gun was in leather, too.

MOREAU:

Myself, I am a peaceful storekeeper. I hate guns so much I never carry one.

WADE (GASPING):

Why you lying, two-faced bunch of......

MATT:

Get out, Wade!

WADE:

....I'm going, Marshal. But no one can run a shindy like this on Morgan Wade. Not and stay alive. (SHORT LAUGH) Good night, gentlemen.

SOUND:

STEPS STAMP OFF, DOOR OPEN, SLAM-OFF

ALL:

(CUE) BREAK INTO LAUGHTER)

MOREAU:

Oho, did you see his face?

CLANCY:

Man, we sure tore up his pride! (LAUGHS)

SOUND:

DOOR OPEN (OFF) STEPS RUN ON

CHESTER (FADE ON, GASPING) Mr. Dillon, you'd better come quick. Narisha just now....9TRAILS OFF)

CLANCY (SHARP):

Something happened to my wife?

MATT:

What is it, Chester? Tell it, Man! Narisha....?

CHESTER (RELUCTANTLY) She stabbed Jack Grace. I think he's dying!

MUSIC

SOUND:

MANY HURRYING STEPS

CHESTER:

He's lying near the stairs, Mr. Dillon. I was afraid to move him. Knife's still in his chest.

MATT:

You send for the Doc?

CHESTER:

Yes, sir.

GRACE (GROANING, FADE ON)

CLANCY:

She didn't do it, Matt...she couldn't!

MATT:

Easy, Clancy

SFX:

FOOTSTEPS STOP)

MATT (CON'T):

Grace...Grace!

GRACE (AGONY):

Pull it out....Please, Dillon....pull out the knife!

MATT:

I can't. If I do, you'll bleed to death.

GRACE:

Dying anyway....what's the difference. Pull it out for me....I'm burning inside. Please!

MATT (BEAT):

All right, Grace...(EFFORT)

GRACE (SHARP CRY OF PAIN) (BEAT) (SIGHS)That's better. Doesn't hurt much now.....I....I just feel sleepy.

MATT:

Who did it, Grace?

GRACE:

Hm?

MATT:

Who knifed you? Why?

GRACE:

Narisha. Stabbed me, the dirty little sava....(SHARP GROAN, DIES)

CLANY (SOBBING LOW):

He lied!.....He lied, Matt!

MATT:

I....I hope so. (MUSING) He's sure scratched up. Scratches all over his face. Teeth marks on his arm. Ever seen this knife before?

CLANCY:

It....It's hers...but she didn't kill him, Matt!

MATT:

Let's talk to her, Clancy. Stay here, Chester.

CHESTER :

Yes, sir.

SFX:

STEPS

CLANCY (DESPERATE):

You know she couldn't murder anyone, Matt.... You know that!

MATT:

Here is your room

SFX:

DOOR OPEN

MATT (CON'T):

Narisha?....

CLANCY:

MATT:

What is it?

CLANCY:

Matt, she's run away!

MUSIC:

BRIDGE

SOUND:

HORSES PAWING: TOWN BACKGROUND

CLANCY (DULLY) You're really going after he, Matt?

MATT:

I have to.

CLANCY:

Don't suppose it would do any good to remind you of our friendship.

MATT:

I have to bring her back, Clancy %u2013she's killed a man....

CLANCY:

Man! You call that foul-tongued lecher a man? (SPITS) I can remember when you....

MATT (GENTLY):

We can both remember a lot, Clancy. But it doesn't do us any good now. I've got a job to do. You know I'll do it.

CLANCY:

Yeah. I know, Mat (BEAT) I'm not sure we're going to be friends much longer...you and I.

MATT:

I hope we are.

CLANCY (BEAT):

Can I ride with you?

MATT (HESITANT):

Well, ....I...

CLANCY (BITTER):

You have my word I won't pull anything. If my word's worthy anything to you.

MATT:

It's worth something. But...

CLANCY (PLEADING):

All I want to do is see she doesn't get hurt. Narish'as only a kid....she'll be scared, Matt....she'll need me.

MATT:

All right, Clancy. Get your horse.

CLANCY (HUSKY):

Thanks, Matt.

SFX:

STEPS GO OFF

MATT (MUTTER):

Sure...

CHESTER (OFF):

Mr. Dillon!

SFX:

STEPS RUN ON

MATT:

Have any luck at the stable?

CHESTER:

No sir. She didn't take her own horse. Guess she was in too much of a hurry. She took Fred Grayson's big gray from the hitchrack in front of the hotel and rode north. He's hopping mad about it...

MATT:

Fred's eh?......Huh, Narisha knows her horseflesh. That big gray can run all day without raising a sweat.

CHESTER:

Yes, sir. And there was a rifle in the saddle boot. (BEAT) Everyone's waiting for you to pick your posse, Mr. Dillon.

MATT:

Tell them to go home. There'll be no posse.

CHESTER:

What! But......

MATT:

Clancy and I are going alone. I'm not going to take a chance on some trigger-happy saloon bum shooting that girl.

CHESTER:

They'll be awful mad. They'll sure think you and Clancy are framing up to get the girl away.....

MATT:

I'm not sure I care what they think. Do as I say, Chester. You can cheer them up by telling them I'll bring her back. (HARSH) If they're real lucky, she'll be convicted and they can watch her hanged.

MUSIC:

BRIDGE

SOUND TWO HORSES WALKING

MATT:

Tracks are getting fresher. By the looks of it, she's making a swing around into the mountains north of Bellefont.

CLANCY (GROANS) She's trying to stay in the neighborhood. Why doesn't she ride straight for the border!

MATT:

I have a hunch she wants to stay near you. Come on we'll cut her sign where she circles back.

SOUND:

HORSES TURNED INTO A GALLOP, FADE OUT, PAUSE, THEN BACK IN, CLIMBING NOW IN ROCKY SHALE...STOPPING.

CLANCY:

(SOUR CHUCKLE): Having trouble?

MATT (IRRITABLY):

Narisha must think that gray's a mountain goat. She's taking trails that aren't fit to walk on, much less ride.

CLANCY:

She was born on a horse. These are bridle paths to her.

MATT:

Ahuh. (BEAT): Well, she's going for the peak, that's sure. We'll push on to that little mesa there and camp for tonight.

CLANCY (SURPRISE):

Camp? Since when does a manhunter like you stop and make camp?

MATT:

Since now. I'm not hunting a man this time.

MUSIC:

SHORT BRIDGE

SOUND:

SMALL FIRE, POURING, NIGHT SOUNDS IN BG

MATT:

More coffee, Clancy?

CLANCY:

No, thanks.

MATT (DRINKS):

Ah. Sure like coffee boiled over a camp fire.

CLANCY:

Fire's easy to see at night.

MATT:

Ahuh.....

SFX:

(DRINKS)

CLANCY:

Just about anyone in these mountains could spot a fire like this.

MATT:

Yep.

SFX:

DRINKS

MATT (CON'T):

Even Narisha.

CLANCY:

I should have known. You're warning her so she can get away! I'm sorry I said....

MATT:

Don't be sorry. The fire's not a warnaing to her.

CLANCY:

But she's bound to see it.....

MATT:

Yeah. And she'll investigate it, I think. The way I figure, when she sees it's just you and I, she'll come in.

CLANCY (PAUSE):

You....rotten....rock-hearted machine.

MATT:

It's only....

CLANCY:

You don't miss a bet, do you?

MATT:

Would you rather I chased her into a corner and frightened her into a shoot out?

CLANCY:

No....no, I guess your'e right, Matt. I don't think Narisha would fire on you....but maybe it's easier this way.

MATT (DRINKS) (PAUSE) Clancy.....

CLANCY:

Yeah?

MATT:

You know Narisha stabbed Grace.

CLANCY (HEAVY SIGH):

Yeah....I know. But why....why?

MATT:

Will yhou give me an honest answer to a question, no matter what the cost?

CLANCY:

If it can help Narisha.

MATT:

It might.

CLANCY:

Ask it. You know I won't lie to you.

MATT:

Do you believe she could and would commit a deliberate murder because of Grace's comments?

CLANCY (FIRM):

No! I swear on my soul, Matt. Narisha could never commit a deliberate murder.

MATT (RELIEF):

That's all I wanted to know.

CLANCY:

Does....does that mean you....

MATT:

It means I believe she's innocent of murder. I'm sure I know what happened. With any luck, I'll prove....

SOUND:

RIFLE SHOT (FAR OFF) RICOCHET ON

BOTH:

(REACT) SHOT FAR OFF

CLANCY:

(YELL OF PAIN)

MATT (WITH HIM):

Hit the dirt...get out of the firelight!

SOUND:

MAN DIVING INTO BRUSH, ROLLING (PAUSE) CRICKET (OFF)

MATT (LOW) (CUE)Clancy.....you get tagged?

CLANCY (LOW) (OFF):

Just a crease across my ribs. I'm okay.

MATT (LOW):

Narisha?

CLANCY (LOW, OFF) (CHUCKLES):

Hardly! Whoever's doing the shooting is on that slope up there.

MATT (LOW):

So?

CLANCY (LOW, OFF):

So it's two hundred yards off and a downhill shot to boot. I've seen Narisha shoot too many times.....at that distance she couldn't hit the state of Texas, much less a man.

MATT (LOW):

Looks like whoever it is has decided to save his shells.

CLANCY (LOW, OFF):

I reckon. We really ought to pay the lad a visit after him sending in his calling cards so polite like.

MATT (LOW):

You feel like a little stroll up that slope?

CLANCY (LOW, OFF):

Now that you mention it, I do.

MATT (LOW):

Take the left and circle in on him. I'll make sure we both got him spotted right. Watching?

CLANCY (LOW, OFF):

Watching.

MATT (RISING)

SFX:

STEPS SLOW

MATT (CON'T) Come on, you bushwacker....Here's your target.....

SOUND RIFLE SHOT (FAR OFF) RICOCHET ON

There you are!.....

SFX:

DIVING INTO BRUSH

CLANCY (OFF):

Okay?

MATT:

Okay. But that boy's a real gunner. He misses close. Let's go teach him better manners.

MUSIC:

UP AND UNDER

MATT:

It's a tricky business, stalking an armed gunman in the dark. But Clancy and I had learned the trade from too many Indian fights where you became an expert...or a corpse. It took me a full half-hour to make my circle around the ambusher's position, holding my gun ready, I saw a shadow take shape in the rocks, but as I aimed, the night's silence was broken......

NARISHA (OFF) (LAUGHING):

Very good! (CLAPPING HER HANDS) You beat my husband!

MATT (REACTING):

....Narisha! So it was you!

SFX:

MATT RISING, STEPS IN BRUSH

NARISHA (FADE ON):

You are wonderful hunter! You are quiet like the Comanche!

SFX:

STEPS STOPPING

MATT (GROWL):

I should be. They taught me. You little idiot, I might have shot you!

NARISHA (MERRY LAUGH):

I not let you do that. I watch you when you get close.

MATT:

I'll take that rifle, Narisha.

NARISHA (SHRUGGING):

Yes, Matt.

SFX:

STEPS COMING ON

CLANCY (FADE ON):

Narisha!....Oh, Narisha!.... (BREAKS)

NARISHA:

My husband is mad at me?

CLANCY (CHOKED):

Mad? No....never....my crazy little girl..(CLINCH) Oh, Narisha....

NARISHA (GASPS):

Blood! ......You are hurt!

MATT:

One of your shots was lucky.

NARISHA:

My shots!

CLANCY:

It's only a scratch.

NARISHA:

But I don't shoot! (MERRY LAUGH) I forget to tell you.

MATT:

Tell us what?

NARISHA:

The man who shoots at you. I hit him.

MATT & CLANCY:

What?

NARISHA:

With a rock. I see him shoot at you and I get very mad. I hit him hard.

MATT:

Where?

NARISHA:

On head.

MATT:

No, no, I mean where is he now?

NARISHA:

There. Under that big rock. I push it on him so he don't go away.

MATT:

Well, I'll be....

SFX:

FEW QUICK STEPS

MATT (CON'T):

He's here, all right. (EFFORT)

SOUND:

CLANCY (FADE ON):

Who is it......well! Our friend from the poker game. Morgan Wade.

MATT:

Yeah. He's alive, but I'd sure hate to have h is head when he wakes up in jail tomorrow. Put him on a horse, Clancy, and let's get back to town.

NARISHA (WISTFUL):

Matt.....

MATT:

Yes?

NARISHA:

You take me to jail? I don't want to go to jail.

MATT (GENTLY):

I'm afraid you must.....for a while, Narisha. But don't be frightened.

NARISHA (BEAT):

They hang me. They hate me in Dodge.

Now...let's see....hmmm...my, my....yes. Mrs. Narisha Yarr stabbed to death one John Grace in Dodge City.

MATT:

(PATIENTLY): Mrs. Yarr wishes to throw herself on the mercy of the Hays City Court.

JUDGE:

Why?

MATT:

Due to known bias in Dodge City and the impossibility of selecting an impartial jury in this area, your honor.

JUDGE:

Because she's an Indian, hey? Go on, Marshal.

MATT:

Her plea is innocent by reason of self-defense.

JUDGE:

Got a lawyer?

MATT:

No, sir. She'll speak for herself. Go on, Narisha....tell him exactly what happened.

NARISHA:

We fight. I kill him.

JUDGE:

A=hmmmmm....I'm afraid I need a few more details.

NARISHA:

Y-yes, sir. It was late, but I could not sleep. I go downtairs to take a walk. On stairs, Mr. Grace meet me....say funny things to me.

JUDGE:

Funny?

NARISHA:

Bad things. You know?

JUDGE:

Go on.

NARISHA:

I get mad, tell him to shut up. He get mad and grab me, make me kiss him. We fight.

JUDGE (GENTLY):

Why didn't you scream for help?

NARISHA (SURPRISE):

Help? I not afraid of him. Just mad.

JUDGE (COUGHS):

I see.:

NMARISHA: I don't get very mad until he tear my dress. But when he do that I bite his arm. I have knife. I use it. Then I am afraid. I know people in town hate me...

JUDGE:

So you ran away.

NARISHA:

Yes, sir.

MATT:

And gave herself up voluntarily, your honor.

JUDGE:

Any substantiation of this story?

MATT:

You have affadavits from the doctor and witnesses to the bite and scratches on the deceased's arm and face. Also an affadvait from the doctor who examined Mrs. Yarr.

JUDGE:

Oh, yes....hmmm...severe bruises around the arms and throat....

MATT:

And from Miss Kitty Davis, who states that Jack Grace had a habit of forcing his attentions on her and other girls working in his establishment.

JUDGE:

(BEAT) I am convinced by the evidence before me that Mrs. Yar is innocent of any criminal act.

MATT:

It's still a frontier country, Clancy. Lots of fresh memories of loved ones who died and left their scalps drying on Black Eagle's lodge poles.

CLANCY (BITTERLY):

And who lied, cheated and stole from Black Eagle until he had to fight back?

MATT:

White men. (SIGHS): But people who hearts are broken don't think of right or wrong. You have to give them time....time to forget.
