Judy Canova was hillbilly comedienne, and wildly popular for a time. You can make a connection between her character and the Beverly Hillbillies of the 196os, although in the 1940s, much of the audience was laughing with her, while two decades later we were meant to laugh at Jed Clampett's family.
In real life Ms Canova hailed from Florida and was considerably more sophisticated than the hayseed character she portrayed on the radio, and was one of the inspirations for a key character in the 21st century television hit "The Marvellous Mrs Maisel."
